CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: India has reportedly asked the United States to extend its waiver allowing continued imports of Russian crude oil as the ongoing Iran war and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz intensify pressure on global energy supplies. The request comes amid growing concerns over rising crude prices, fuel shortages, and instability in international shipping routes critical to India’s energy security.
According to reports, the US had earlier granted India a temporary waiver permitting refiners to purchase Russian oil cargoes already stranded at sea following sanctions and disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict. That waiver is set to expire soon, prompting New Delhi to seek an extension to maintain stable fuel supplies and control domestic energy costs.
India remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil, with a significant share traditionally passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The prolonged conflict involving Iran has severely affected maritime energy routes, increasing the urgency for alternative and reliable oil sources. Russian crude has emerged as a crucial supply option due to its availability and discounted pricing.
Reports also indicate that Indian officials are engaged in diplomatic discussions with Washington to balance energy security needs with geopolitical considerations linked to sanctions on Russia and Iran. Analysts warn that continued instability in West Asia could further disrupt global oil markets and impact inflation worldwide.
