CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : The Indian government has signed a significant agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 97 Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This deal, valued at approximately $7.4 billion, marks a major step towards enhancing India’s indigenous defense capabilities.
The Tejas Mark 1A is an advanced version of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), featuring improved avionics, radar systems, and weaponry compared to its predecessor. With over 65% of its components being of indigenous origin, the Tejas program underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
This procurement is part of a broader strategy to modernize the IAF’s fleet, replacing aging aircraft and bolstering the nation’s defense preparedness. The deal also supports the “Make in India” initiative, promoting local industries and creating employment opportunities in the defense sector.
The induction of these 97 Tejas jets is expected to commence soon, with deliveries planned over the coming years. This move not only strengthens India’s air defense capabilities but also positions the Tejas as a competitive player in the global defense market.
