CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. India’s heritage list has marked another significant achievement. Five new heritage entries from India have been included in UNESCO’s tentative list for World Heritage sites. With this, the total number of sites from India on the tentative list has risen to 78.
The new entries include the Bagh Cave paintings, the temple groups of the Chambal Valley, the Udayagiri Caves and Ginnorgarh Fort in Madhya Pradesh. In addition, a serial and transnational proposal titled “Sites of Satyagraha”, linked to India and South Africa, has also been added to the list.
The Udayagiri Caves are an important example of Gupta-period religious and architectural heritage. The Bagh Caves are known for their Buddhist mural paintings. The temple groups of the Chambal Valley include historic sites such as Bateshwar, Padavali and Kakanmath. Ginnorgarh is a historic fort located in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh.
The “Sites of Satyagraha” proposal includes locations in India and South Africa associated with the development and expansion of Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha movement. Inclusion in UNESCO’s tentative list is not the same as final inscription on the World Heritage List, but it is considered an important stage in the nomination process ahead.
