CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the auspicious occasion of the Indian New Year, Rabindranath Tagore University, Bhopal, organized a grand and enlightening lecture on “Indian New Year and the Scientific Nature of Indian Timekeeping” in the Katha Auditorium. The event was jointly conducted by the Centre for Sanskrit, Oriental Languages & Indian Knowledge Tradition, the Faculty of Humanities and Liberal Arts, and the World Rang Foundation.
The keynote speaker, Deepak Sharma, delivered a detailed and research-based lecture, effectively presenting the Indian calendrical system through a PowerPoint presentation. Using images of astronomical instruments and structures obtained from Jantar Mantar, he illustrated that in ancient India, timekeeping was not merely a tradition but a developed scientific system grounded in astronomy and mathematical precision.

Sharma elaborated on fine time measurements such as Yugabda and Hora, explaining that the Indian timekeeping system is highly scientific and consistent. He also mentioned the attempts by the British during the colonial period to undermine India’s knowledge traditions, while emphasizing that its relevance persists today.
The program was chaired by Amitabh Saxena, who highlighted in his presidential address the contemporary importance of scientific timekeeping in Indian knowledge traditions. The event commenced with a welcome address by Savitri Singh Parihar. The program was conducted by Shailendra Singh, who managed the proceedings efficiently and effectively. At the conclusion, gratitude was expressed by University Secretary Sangeeta Johri.
The event was attended by a large number of professors, researchers, and students. It successfully raised awareness among students and the audience about Indian knowledge traditions and the scientific basis of timekeeping, making it a highly impactful and successful program.
