CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Indian men’s and women’s teams registered impressive victories in the third round of the 46th Chess Olympiad being held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The men’s team defeated Italy 3-1, while the women’s team secured a 3.5-0.5 win against Greece. Both Indian teams are putting up a strong performance in the tournament.
In the men’s section, D Gukesh and Nihal Sarin won their respective games. Gukesh, playing with the black pieces, returned to winning ways by defeating Italy’s Sabino Brunello. Nihal Sarin beat Francesco Sonis. The games of R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi ended in draws. In the women’s section, Koneru Humpy, Vantika Agrawal and B Savitha Shri recorded victories. Humpy defeated Stavroula Tsolakidou, while Vantika beat Ekaterini Pavlidou and Savitha Shri got the better of Antonia Christodoulaki. Divya Deshmukh’s game against Anastasia Avramidou ended in a draw. The women’s team remains unbeaten after three rounds and continues to hold the top position. India are the defending champions in both sections and are in the fray this time as well to defend both titles. Several rounds remain in the Olympiad, making the upcoming clashes important.
