CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Indian women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs to win the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 title, but a major controversy emerged after the victory over the presentation of the trophy. The Indian players refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision had been taken by the Indian cricket board. According to him, in view of the situation in India-Pakistan relations after the Pahalgam terror attack and the sentiments in the country, the BCCI has adopted a position of maintaining distance from Pakistan. It was necessary for the team to play in the tournament, but accepting the trophy from Naqvi was not mandatory.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar also supported the BCCI’s decision and said the team stood fully with it. The development recalled the 2025 men’s Asia Cup, when the Indian men’s team had also refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi.
