India’s first approved vaccine for the prevention of dengue, QDENGA, is expected to be available in the market in the first half of 2027. The vaccine, developed by Japanese company Takeda, received marketing approval from India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in July 2026. It is the first dengue vaccine to be approved in India.
The vaccine has been approved for people aged 4 to 60 years. QDENGA is administered in two doses, with a gap of three months between the two doses. Notably, people who have previously had dengue can also receive the vaccine within the prescribed age group.
For the vaccine’s availability in India, Takeda has partnered with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Under the agreement, Dr. Reddy’s will be responsible for the promotion and distribution of QDENGA in the private market. According to the company, after the required procedures are completed, the vaccine may become available in the first half of 2027.
QDENGA has been designed to develop an immune response against all four major serotypes of the dengue virus – DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4. However, even after the vaccine becomes available, protection from mosquitoes, preventing water accumulation and seeking timely medical advice in case of infection will remain necessary.
