CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid ongoing West Asia conflicts, India’s hospitality sector is grappling with severe LPG and cooking gas shortages, impacting hotels, restaurants, and catering services nationwide. Many restaurants have reported scaled-back menus, cold kitchens, and temporary service disruptions as commercial gas supplies dwindle.
Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) including Hindustan Petroleum, Indian Oil Corp, and Bharat Petroleum are stepping up production and prioritising domestic household supply to mitigate the impact. The Ministry of Petroleum has also established a committee of executive directors to review and regulate non-domestic supply, ensuring essential sectors such as hospitals, schools, and public institutions continue to receive uninterrupted LPG.
The shortage stems from disrupted fuel imports due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly the US-Iran conflict affecting crude and LPG shipments. Analysts warn that the hospitality industry could face prolonged operational stress unless alternative supply channels are secured. Industry associations are urging government action to stabilise commercial gas distribution and provide relief to businesses reliant on consistent LPG supply.
This crisis highlights India’s reliance on imported LPG and the need for contingency planning for critical services while balancing domestic and non-domestic energy demands.
