CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Pune. Another important step has been taken in the expansion of the metro network in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Pune’s 23-kilometre-long Metro Pink Line on November 3. The project will provide direct connectivity between Pune’s Hinjewadi IT hub and the District Court Metro Station in Shivajinagar. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for four new corridors under the second phase of Pune Metro.

Metro network grows from 248 km to 1,200 km

At the inauguration programme, the Prime Minister said that before 2014, the operational metro network in the country was about 248 kilometres, which has now increased to around 1,200 kilometres. Metro services are currently operational in 26 cities across the country, and more than one crore passengers use them every day. The Prime Minister said modern transport facilities play an important role in the development of cities and in making people’s lives easier.

Features of the 23-kilometre Pink Line

Pune Metro’s Pink Line has been built at a cost of about Rs 8,313 crore. The corridor has a total of 23 stations. It will be operated entirely by women train operators. About 30 percent of the project’s power requirement is planned to be met through solar energy. Passenger services will begin from November 4. In the initial phase, 17 of the 23 stations will be opened for passengers, while the remaining stations are planned to be opened in phases by January 2027.

Four new corridors in the second phase

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for four corridors under the second phase of Pune Metro, with an estimated cost of about Rs 13,500 crore. These include routes from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, Kharadi to Khadakwasla and Nal Stop to Manik Bagh.

The new projects are expected to improve connectivity to Pune’s major residential, commercial and IT areas. This will make travel easier for passengers and may also help reduce pressure on road traffic.
