CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : International Moon Day Celebrated at Regional Science Centre, Bhopal

Marking one of the most extraordinary achievements in human history, the Regional Science Centre, Bhopal celebrated International Moon Day with inspiring and educational activities for students and general visitors.

On July 16, 1969, NASA’s Apollo 11 mission was launched from Kennedy Space Center. Just four days later, on July 20, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon, followed by Buzz Aldrin, while Michael Collins orbited above in the command module. Armstrong’s iconic words — “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” — continue to inspire generations.

The event featured a range of interactive and educational programs aimed at fostering curiosity and understanding about lunar science, space exploration, and the historic Apollo 11 mission. Highlights included:

  1. Moon Lander Construction Workshop

Students actively participated in this hands-on workshop to learn the science and engineering behind space missions. They created paper models of the Eagle Lunar Module, understanding its various components such as the descent stage, ascent stage, hatch, fuel tanks, and AFT equipment. Through this, they learned about the module’s role in the Apollo 11 mission.

  1. Moon Exhibition

A special exhibit for students, parents, and visitors showcased fascinating facts about the Moon. Using interactive props, concepts like the lunar surface structure, eclipses, Moon phases, and the rotation and revolution of the Earth and Moon were explained in an engaging way. The exhibit attracted keen interest and curiosity.

  1. Quiz Competition

A quiz based on the Apollo 11 mission and general lunar facts allowed participants to test and expand their knowledge in a fun way, making space science both accessible and exciting.

  1. Film Screening and Informative Session on Apollo 11

A documentary on the Apollo 11 mission was screened, followed by an interactive discussion session. Participants learned about how astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins successfully carried out this landmark mission with courage and precision.

The session also highlighted why this mission was significant not only for the USA but for all humankind. It also inspired discussions on how such missions have influenced India’s space ambitions, including the Gaganyaan mission and the upcoming Indian space station.
