CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In connection with Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day, awareness activities were organized in healthcare institutions to promote the use of iodine and educate about its benefits. This year, the day is being observed under the theme “Strengthening Public Health through Awareness and Action.” On this occasion, counseling sessions were held to inform people about the advantages of iodine in the body. Additionally, oath and signature programs were organized to encourage the exclusive use of iodized salt. Samples were also collected from various locations by the Food and Drug Administration team for iodine testing.

In healthcare institutions, detailed information was provided to ANC (Antenatal Care) women about the benefits of iodine for the unborn child. It was explained that 90% of human brain development occurs from the third month of pregnancy to the first three years after birth, making it essential for pregnant women to consume iodized salt.

Iodine deficiency can lead to various issues such as goiter, delayed mental development, miscarriages, excessive fatigue, learning difficulties, hearing and speech impairments in children, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and increased sensitivity to cold. These issues can be prevented by using iodized salt.

Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bhopal, stated that iodine is a micronutrient essential for the production of thyroxine hormone. It plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature, brain function, growth, and reproduction. Iodine deficiency can occur due to a lack of iodine in the soil, locally grown foods, and water sources.
