Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted a 78-run win over touring Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to leapfrog three sides and climb to third in the league standings.
Chennai put up a daunting 212-run total riding on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s spectacular 98-run knock and Daryl Mitchell’s 52 before Tushar Deshpande starred with a four-wicket haul to wrap Hyderabad up for 134.
CSK were put to bat as Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane walked out to begin the innings. SRH managed to dismiss Rahane early in the game through Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the veteran fell for 9 off 12 deliveries. Kiwi Daryl Mitchell replaced the Indian in the middle as Gaikwad picked up boundaries in a consistent manner as Chennai reached the 50-run mark in the powerplay overs.

Mitchell joined in on the act with a couple of boundaries including a brilliant maximum over long off to welcome SRH skipper Pat Cummins to the crease. Gaikwad raced away to his half-century in 27 balls as he reached the landmark with a spectacular six into the crowd before lifting his willow in jubilation.
The hosts brought up the triple-digit mark in the 11th over as Mitchell picked up a four off T Natarajan. The New Zealand batter picked up the scoring rate as he took Shahbaz Ahmed for a couple of boundaries.
Mitchell brought up his half-century to keep the scoreboard ticking before he was undone by Jaydev Unadkat and Shivam Dube took his place.
Gaikwad peppered the starry stadium with some incredible cricketing shots that oozed authenticity and orthodoxy as he continued his good form at home with the captain’s armband on. Dube settled in well before dealing in maximums while Gaikwad scored all around the park to help his side reach the 200-run landmark.
However, a second consecutive ton at The Den eluded Gaikwad as Nitish Kumar Reddy caught him in the deep off Natarajan’s final over of the innings. The crowd roared to acknowledge the skipper’s knock and welcomed the new man in, the man whose name was plastered across the back of every yellow jersey in the crowd, MS Dhoni.
