In the video made for UPSC aspirants, she is seen in police uniform. The video begins with “Assalamu alaikum,” and during the conversation she uses the words “Inshallah” and, at the end, “Jazakallah.” These words have triggered a controversy on social media.
“Jazakallah” is an Arabic prayer-related expression. Its general meaning is: “May Allah reward you well for this,” or “May God give you its reward.” It is commonly used to express gratitude in response to someone’s thanks or help. “Jazakallah khair” roughly means “May Allah reward you with goodness.”
Some organisations and social media users objected to the use of these words in Bushra Bano’s video. The complainants questioned the use of religious expressions by a government officer and referred to national greetings such as “Jai Hind” or “Vande Mataram.” On the other hand, some people described it as a matter linked to language and personal expression.
Amid the controversy, the West Bengal government has transferred Bushra Bano and appointed her as Deputy Commandant in the State Armed Police. However, the government order does not clearly state the reason for the transfer, and the government has not directly linked the video controversy to the transfer.
