CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a massive deportation drive, Iran has expelled more than 88,000 Afghan migrants within just one week, intensifying an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region. The deportations, carried out by Iranian border authorities, come as Afghanistan continues to struggle with economic collapse, internal displacement, and lack of access to basic services under the Taliban regime.
Most of those deported are undocumented workers and refugees who had fled to Iran in search of safety, employment, or stability. Human rights organizations and international aid agencies have raised concerns over the speed and scale of the deportations, citing inadequate humanitarian support and the potential for abuse during the repatriation process.
Iran, which hosts one of the world’s largest populations of Afghan refugees, has cited rising domestic pressures, economic strain, and border control challenges as reasons behind the move. However, the sudden influx of returnees into Afghanistan has overwhelmed aid systems and raised alarm among UN agencies.
The situation underscores the urgent need for a coordinated international response to support Afghan migrants, protect refugee rights, and address the root causes of displacement in the region.
