CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tensions between the United States and Iran have risen once again. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that on August 30 it fired ballistic missiles at two US military bases in Jordan. According to the Iranian side, the attack was carried out in response to US military action on Iran’s Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz.
The bases the IRGC claimed to have targeted include the King Hussein and Al-Azraq military bases. However, Jordan’s military said its air defence system intercepted eight missiles fired from Iran. Initial reports did not independently confirm major damage to the US bases or casualties among US troops.
Earlier, the US military had targeted Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island. According to US officials, the launchers posed a threat of rockets and naval mines being deployed in the Strait of Hormuz. The United States described its action as a limited military operation carried out to prevent a potential threat.
Amid these developments, concerns have also emerged among US troops and military officials over a prolonged conflict with Iran. There are fears that a drawn-out war could increase pressure on weapons and military resources. This could also raise strategic challenges for US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in relation to the military operation.
The rising military tensions between Iran and the United States could affect the entire Middle East. In particular, any major conflict in the Strait of Hormuz could affect global oil supplies and international maritime trade. The latest developments have increased fears that the conflict could spread further in the region.
