The US military targeted two rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz. According to US officials, the launchers were being prepared for use in firing rockets carrying naval mines into the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first confirmed US military action on Iranian territory since July.
After the US strike, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed retaliatory action. According to the IRGC, its Aerospace Force attacked the King Hussein and Al-Azraq US military bases in Jordan with ballistic missiles and drones. Iran described the action as a response to the US strike on Larak Island.
Jordan’s military said its air defence systems intercepted eight missiles that entered its airspace. Initial reports did not confirm any injuries at either of the two US bases. The Iranian side, meanwhile, claimed damage to US military infrastructure, but this has not been independently confirmed.
The United States says the action on Larak Island was aimed at securing maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz. Hormuz is one of the world’s key energy transport routes, and rising military tensions there are expected to affect global oil supplies and international maritime trade. Oil prices also rose after the latest developments.
The attack on Larak Island and Iran’s subsequent retaliatory action have increased fears that the US-Iran conflict could widen further. This new round of retaliatory strikes between the two countries has become a major concern for both the security situation in the Middle East and the global energy market.
