The US military targeted two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island. According to US officials, the launchers were being prepared to deploy naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
After the US action, Iran claimed retaliatory action. According to the IRGC, it targeted the US military bases of King Hussein and Al-Azraq in Jordan with ballistic missiles. Iranian media described it as action taken in response to the US strike.
According to Jordan’s military, its air defence system intercepted eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace. Initial reports did not independently confirm major damage. However, the Iranian side claimed that its attack damaged US military infrastructure.
Iran reacted strongly to the US strike on Larak Island. The IRGC said there were reports that several of its soldiers and civilians had been killed or injured in the US action, and it had warned of a response. These claims have not yet been independently confirmed.
The developments have further increased concern over the Strait of Hormuz. The route is extremely important for global oil supplies. Rising military tension in the region could also affect international maritime trade and crude oil prices. On Monday, oil prices rose by more than 2 percent after the fresh tensions.
The latest military confrontation between the United States and Iran has increased fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. The world is now watching closely for the next moves by both sides.
