CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Irregular periods, acne and hair loss may signal PCOS in women

Problems such as irregular periods, acne on the face and excessive hair loss in women are often considered normal and ignored. However, these symptoms may be linked to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). According to the World Health Organization, PCOS is a common hormonal condition that can cause irregular menstruation, ovulation problems, acne, excessive hair growth on the body or face, and thinning hair on the head.

PCOS symptoms can vary from woman to woman. Some women may have long gaps between periods, while others may experience oily skin, acne, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, and excessive hair growth on the face or body. Hair loss may also be linked to hormonal changes.

PCOS cannot be confirmed on the basis of these symptoms alone. Doctors generally review menstrual and health history, conduct a physical examination and, if required, recommend hormone and other blood tests. In some cases, an ultrasound is also performed. According to the WHO, while diagnosing PCOS, it is also important to rule out other possible causes.

There is no single permanent cure for PCOS, but its symptoms can be managed through lifestyle changes and medicines prescribed by a doctor. The condition may also be associated with long-term health risks such as insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes. Therefore, women with persistently irregular periods or other related symptoms should consult a gynaecologist or relevant medical specialist for evaluation.
