CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Israel election three years after Hamas attack poses challenge for Netanyahu

The upcoming election in Israel could become a major challenge for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, the Netanyahu government has faced continuing questions over the country’s security arrangements, government accountability and decisions linked to the war. Against this backdrop, opposition parties have become more active in electoral politics and all eyes are on the mood of voters.

Several election surveys have indicated that the alliance led by Netanyahu may find it difficult to reach the majority mark. However, results may vary from one survey to another, and political equations can still change before the election. At present, it is not considered certain that any camp will secure a clear majority.

Security and accountability are key election issues. The security lapse during the October 7, 2023, attack has become a major electoral issue for Netanyahu’s opponents. Several critics, including opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot, are demanding accountability from the government. Netanyahu’s supporters, meanwhile, defend his security policies and military operations. According to surveys, the anniversary of the Hamas attack has further strengthened existing political divisions among voters.

A majority requires 61 seats. Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has a total of 120 seats, and the support of at least 61 seats is required to form a government. In recent surveys, both Netanyahu’s coalition and the camp opposing him appear to be short of this figure. In such a situation, support from smaller parties and Arab parties after the election could play a decisive role in government formation.

Voting in Israel is scheduled for October 27, 2026. The election is being seen as important not only for Netanyahu’s political future, but also for the country’s security policy after the Hamas attack and the direction of the next government.
