Mumbai. The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested an IT engineer from Bengaluru in a case involving threatening messages sent to Bollywood actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Tusshar Kapoor and a demand for crores of rupees in extortion. The accused has been identified as 30-year-old Vaibhav Mishra. According to police, he allegedly tried to frighten film stars and extort money from them by claiming links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Threatening messages sent through Instagram: According to the police investigation, the accused sent a threatening message to Ayushmann Khurrana through Instagram and demanded crores of rupees. In addition, an audio message was also sent to Tusshar Kapoor, in which the sender identified himself as Harry Boxer and demanded Rs 5 crore in extortion. Police suspect the accused may have targeted several other Bollywood personalities as well.
Accused traced through technical investigation: After receiving the complaint, the Mumbai Crime Branch began tracing the sender on the basis of social media profiles and technical information. During the investigation, the accused’s IP address was traced to Bengaluru. A Mumbai Police team then arrested him with the help of local police. The accused is being brought to Mumbai on transit remand.
No suspected link to Lawrence gang so far: In the initial police investigation, no link has emerged between Vaibhav Mishra and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Officials suspect he tried to take advantage of the atmosphere of fear in Bollywood after the firing on Tiger Shroff’s car to make quick money. Police are also investigating whether artificial intelligence was used to prepare the threatening audio messages. According to police, the accused used an auto-delete feature on social media, which could make messages disappear after 24 hours. Cyber forensic experts are now helping efforts to recover deleted messages and other digital evidence. Further questioning in the case is continuing.
