Mumbai. The Crime Branch of Mumbai Police has arrested a 30-year-old IT engineer from Bengaluru in a case involving threats to Bollywood stars in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demands for extortion running into crores of rupees. The accused has been identified as Vaibhav Mishra. According to police, he was allegedly sending threatening messages and audio clips to film personalities while claiming to be a member of the gang.
Ayushmann Khurrana and Tusshar Kapoor targeted: According to the investigation, actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Tusshar Kapoor had also received threatening messages. Crores of rupees were allegedly demanded from Ayushmann Khurrana, while an audio message sent to Tusshar Kapoor demanded extortion of Rs 5 crore. The sender of the messages claimed to be linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and also used the name of Harry Boxer in one case.
Technical probe led police to Bengaluru: After receiving the complaint, the Mumbai Crime Branch tried to identify the sender of the messages on the basis of social media accounts and technical information. The investigation traced the accused to Bengaluru, where a police team arrested him. Police are now examining his mobile phone, electronic devices and social media activity.
No evidence of gang links: According to police officials, the initial investigation has not found any link between the accused and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. It is suspected that he tried to make quick money by taking advantage of the fear among film stars after the firing on Tiger Shroff’s car. Police are also investigating whether he used artificial intelligence to send the threatening messages.
The accused is being brought to Mumbai after the transit remand process. Police will question him to find out how many people he targeted and whether any other person was also involved in the case.
