West Central Railway has taken innovative steps to make the maintenance of railway locomotives more effective, safe and quality-oriented. Under the initiative, a portable testing unit has been developed at the electric loco shed in Itarsi using parts obtained from old equipment, without any additional expenditure. At the same time, a modern, dust-free and sound-proof cabin has been prepared at the electric loco shed in Tughlakabad for testing dampers.
These initiatives will help improve efficiency in maintenance work, ensure better use of resources and provide a safe working environment for employees. The portable testing unit developed at zero cost in Itarsi was prepared by employees of the electronics lab of the electric loco shed by reusing available old parts. With the help of this unit, the four thyristors installed in the BHEL-manufactured auxiliary converter can be tested separately to identify faulty components.
This innovation will help identify faults in electrical equipment and reduce the time required for repairs. Developing a useful testing device without additional financial expenditure is also an excellent example of the effective use of available railway resources and the technical skill of employees.
At the electric loco shed in Tughlakabad, a special cabin with transparent glass walls has been built for damper testing. Dampers play an important role in controlling shocks and maintaining stability in railway locomotives.
During testing in this special cabin, sensitive equipment will be protected from dust and metal particles. In addition, dampers can be tested in a controlled environment while reducing noise and potential safety risks. This is expected to improve the quality of testing and the accuracy of results.
These initiatives by West Central Railway will help save time in loco maintenance work, improve the testing process and ensure maximum use of available resources. Better maintenance will also contribute to maintaining the reliability of railway locomotives and strengthening safe and smooth rail operations.
