Many taxpayers often wonder: if TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) has already been deducted from their salary or income, is it still necessary to file an Income Tax Return (ITR)? This confusion isn’t limited to salaried individuals — it also exists among small business owners and pensioners. However, the income tax system is not solely based on TDS. Its purpose is to clearly declare one’s income and the government’s rightful claim on it. Hence, filing an ITR is a mandatory process, not just a formality.
First, it’s important to understand that TDS is merely a mechanism for tax collection, not a final settlement. For example, if someone’s total annual income exceeds ₹5 lakh, they are legally required to file an ITR, even if TDS has already been deducted by their employer. On the other hand, if a person’s income is below ₹2.5 lakh, but TDS has been deducted by a bank on interest earned, then ITR must still be filed to claim a refund.
In many cases, an individual’s actual tax liability may differ from the TDS amount. If during the year you’ve taken a home loan, made donations, or incurred medical expenses, these deductions can only be reported via the ITR form — not through Form 16 or a TDS certificate — to accurately balance your tax liability.
As per tax regulations, filing ITR is mandatory for certain types of income — such as business income or capital gains — even if TDS has been deducted. Moreover, if you’ve invested in foreign assets or hold a foreign bank account, then ITR filing becomes mandatory even if your total income is below the exemption threshold.
Filing an ITR is not just a taxpayer’s duty, but also a reflection of financial discipline. It serves as proof of income in various future scenarios — including loan applications, visa processing, and government documentation.
So, thinking “TDS is deducted, nothing else is needed” is a dangerous misconception. Every individual should file their ITR honestly, detailing their income, investments, and deductions. It’s not only a legal obligation, but also part of being a responsible citizen.
