Her departure is an irreparable loss not only for Bihar but for folk music across India. Known for her melodious voice and humble personality, Sharda Sinha has left a lasting impression throughout Bihar and every corner of India over decades.

Early Life and Struggles:

Sharda Sinha was born in the Supaul district of Bihar. Raised in a modest family, she carved out a unique identity in the music world through her hard work and dedication. She began her career with All India Radio Patna, auditioning in 1972. Her sweet voice quickly captured hearts beyond Bihar, winning admiration nationwide.

Contribution to Folk Music:

Sharda Sinha’s name is synonymous with Chhath Puja and other major festivals in Bihar. Her songs like “Kelwa ke Paat Par Ugelan Suraj,” “Sun Sakhi Mangal Gaave Kariya,” and “Jagadamba Ghar Mein Diya Bar Aini Ho” are still heard at every festival. Her voice is an essential part of the Chhath festival in every village and town in Bihar.

Awards and Honors:

For her contributions, Sharda Sinha was honored with prestigious awards such as the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. She received the Padma Bhushan in 2018, reflecting her dedication to music.

Beyond being an exceptional singer, Sharda Sinha was known for her sweet nature. Former Bihar Music Academy President Dr. Shankar Prasad shared that Sharda ji greatly respected her seniors and often gifted them shawls. She was also known for encouraging the younger generation of artists.

Sharda Sinha also made her mark in Bollywood. She lent her voice to the iconic song “Lo Chali Main” from the superhit film Hum Aapke Hain Koun, which remains close to the hearts of listeners. Through this song, she brought Indian folk music into Bollywood.

Sharda ji, who had been unwell, was receiving treatment at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those inquiring about her health. Her son announced her passing on social media, writing, “Chhathi Maiya has called mother to her.” The news cast a shadow of mourning across the country.
