CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai. With the release of Rajinikanth’s film ‘Jailer 2’ on Thursday, October 15, the box-office contest became more interesting. Amid the new film’s strong start, attention also remained on the earnings of Ajay Devgn’s ‘Drishyam 3: The Conclusion’ and ‘Hanuman Ansh’, based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba. Early box-office figures indicate that despite the new release, these films continue to perform at different levels.
‘Jailer 2’ records big opening on day one
Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Jailer 2’ collected an estimated Rs 59.70 crore net in India on its first day. The film’s domestic gross business stood at around Rs 70.25 crore, while overseas earnings of nearly Rs 55 crore pushed its opening worldwide gross collection past Rs 125 crore. These figures are based on early trade estimates and may change in the final count.
The film’s release generated particular excitement among fans of South Indian cinema. However, reports also emerged of differences between some major multiplex chains and the producers over the OTT release window, affecting the availability of its Hindi version in North India.
Focus on ‘Drishyam 3’ earnings
Ajay Devgn’s ‘Drishyam 3: The Conclusion’ continued its box-office run in its second week. On October 15, the film’s net collection in India was reported at around Rs 4.25 crore. With this, its domestic earnings reached about Rs 333 crore, while its worldwide gross collection was reported at more than Rs 515 crore.
A drop in the earnings of an older title after the release of a new film can be a normal box-office trend. However, it would not be correct to conclude on the basis of one day’s figures alone that ‘Jailer 2’ directly affected the business of ‘Drishyam 3’. Earnings in the coming days, the number of shows and audience attendance will also need to be watched.
‘Hanuman Ansh’ continues its business
Vishal Chaturvedi’s film ‘Hanuman Ansh’, inspired by the life of Neem Karoli Baba, remained in theatres on its 70th day of release. According to available figures, the film collected around Rs 65 lakh net in India on October 15. Its domestic net business stood at about Rs 338.98 crore, while the worldwide gross collection figure was not clearly specified in the available data.
The film’s long theatrical run reflects sustained interest among its audience base. At the same time, the presence of films such as ‘Drishyam 3’ and ‘Jailer 2’ may increase competition for shows and audiences in cinemas.
All eyes on the coming days
In Thursday’s early figures, ‘Jailer 2’ made a big start, while ‘Drishyam 3’ and ‘Hanuman Ansh’ continued their business. Weekend collections will now help assess how much impact the new release has on the performance of other films. A film’s long-term box-office success is judged not only by its opening day, but also by sustained earnings, audience response and its hold in theatres.
