The film Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, is in the news not only for its grand sets and visual effects but also for its special jewellery. Jaipur jewellery brand Tribe Amrapali has created more than 4,500 ornaments for the film. Research, design and craftsmanship for these pieces continued for more than 18 months. The jewellery prepared for the first part of the film reflects the distinct cultural identities of Ayodhya, Mithila and Lanka.
Different designs for the three realms
For the jewellery designs, the team studied Ramayana narratives, ancient Indian ornaments, temple art, sculptures and historical references. The jewellery for Ayodhya gives priority to royal dignity and traditional carving. In Lord Ram’s ornaments, symbols associated with the Suryavanshi identity, such as the sun and the Dharmachakra, have been used.
The jewellery for Mithila features floral and nature-inspired designs, reflecting the gentleness and cultural heritage of Sita’s character. Lanka’s ornaments, on the other hand, have been made more grand, sharp and imposing. Separate designs have also been created for characters such as Mandodari, Vibhishan and Shurpanakha along with Ravan.
The speciality of wooden jewellery
Some of the ornaments prepared for the film use wood and lightweight materials so that the actors can perform and move easily while wearing jewellery that appears heavy. Special craftsmanship has been used to give these pieces a fine finish resembling traditional metalwork.
Designers, model makers and skilled artisans worked together on this project. The two-part film, with a budget of about Rs 4,000 crore, has been directed by Nitesh Tiwari.
