CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. A sharp exchange took place between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and a Pakistani journalist during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During a press interaction at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the journalist accused India of sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan and asked Jaishankar when the Indian government would stop the alleged activity.
Responding to the Pakistani journalist’s question, Jaishankar said, “A terrorist country is asking me this question.” After this, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, told the journalist that he had heard the External Affairs Minister’s response.
The exchange took place after a press interaction in which Jaishankar and Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti briefed reporters about the new “Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers,” linked to maritime transport and the safety of seafarers.
The main subject of the interaction was maritime security, but the Pakistani journalist’s question shifted the discussion towards allegations and counter-allegations related to terrorism between India and Pakistan.
The development comes at a time when rhetoric between India and Pakistan continues at the United Nations over terrorism, Kashmir and regional security. India has long accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, while Pakistan has also levelled similar allegations against India. The claims made by both countries have continued to draw contradictory responses at the political and diplomatic levels.
