CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Australian cricketer Jake Weatherald has been ruled out of a Sheffield Shield match after suffering concussion following a head injury. Weatherald, 31, who was playing for South Australia, chased the ball and dived near the fence while trying to save a boundary on the first day of the match against Victoria. During the effort, his head struck first the boundary picket and then a concrete wall.

Despite the injury, Weatherald remained on the field and later came out to bat. However, after concussion symptoms appeared the next day, he was withdrawn from the match. Matthew Gilkes was brought into the team as a concussion substitute. Weatherald was dismissed for a duck after facing six balls in the first innings.

The injury came at a time when Weatherald, after being left out of the Australian Test team, was trying to make a mark in domestic cricket and attract the selectors’ attention. Under Cricket Australia guidelines, concussion symptoms can appear later after a blow to the head, and a player’s return is allowed only after medical assessment and the prescribed process.
