CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid protests demanding the restoration of student union elections at Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia after nearly two decades, the university administration has agreed to hold the polls. According to an order issued on October 26, 2026, elections will be held 15 days after the student union constitution is approved. However, the protesting students are not fully satisfied with the announcement. They are demanding that a clear written timeline be announced for approving the constitution and holding the elections.

Student union elections have not been held since 2006. Elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union have not been held since 2006. Students have long been demanding the restoration of an elected representative body. During the recent protest, some students also sat on an indefinite hunger strike. They said the student union is an important medium for taking students’ problems and demands to the administration.

What assurance did the administration give? In the order issued by Registrar Prof. M. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, the administration said student union elections would be held and that suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest would be withdrawn. In addition, the order provides for forming a committee to inquire into the conduct of security personnel during the protest.

Why were students not satisfied? The protesting students said the order does not state by when the student union constitution will be approved. Since the 15-day period for elections will begin only after the constitution is approved, they said the actual election date is still not clear. The students also reiterated their demand for the resignation of the university proctor.

What happens next? Some points of agreement have emerged between the administration and the students, but disagreement over the election timeline continues. Attention will now be on the process of approving the student union constitution and the next strategy of the protesting students.
