CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi. Amid a student protest at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University, the university administration has extended the period for online classes until November 8, 2026. During this period, the second mid-semester examinations will also be held online. The administration has said the situation on campus will be reviewed after November 8 and further arrangements will be decided on that basis.

Protests are continuing at the university over the demand for restoration of the students’ union and the holding of students’ union elections. The protesting students say elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union have not been held since 2006. Students are demanding that the administration announce a definite date for the elections and set a timeline for approving the students’ union constitution.

In an order issued on October 26, the university administration had said elections would be held within 15 days of approval of the students’ union constitution. The administration also announced the withdrawal of some suspension orders and show-cause notices issued during the protest, and the formation of a committee to examine the conduct of security personnel. However, the protesting students did not consider this sufficient for their key demands and said they would continue the movement.

Amid tension on campus, security was increased outside the university during the protest, and incidents of clashes between students and police, as well as detentions, came to light. The administration has directed protesters, including hunger-striking students Rehan Khan and Ebin Basil, to vacate the protest site. It has also warned of disciplinary and legal action if the order is not followed.

On the other hand, the protesting students say the movement will not be ended until a clear timeline is given for the students’ union election process and their other demands. According to the university’s instructions, the schedule and procedure for the online mid-semester examinations will be decided by the respective deans, heads of departments and directors in consultation with the Controller of Examinations. PhD research scholars have also been asked to remain in online contact with their research supervisors. For now, academic activities at the university will continue through online mode. After November 8, a decision on starting offline classes or extending the online arrangement will be taken on the basis of a review of the campus situation.
