The protest at Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia University demanding the restoration of student union elections became more tense on 26 October. Amid the deployment of police and paramilitary forces at the university’s main gates, several students were seen climbing over the gates to enter the campus. Several students protesting outside the campus were detained by police. Tension remained around the university after security arrangements were tightened.
Demand for restoration of student union elections: The protesting students are demanding that elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union be held, disciplinary action taken against students be withdrawn, and the conduct of security personnel be investigated. Student union elections have not been held for a long time, and students have been agitating for their restoration. Some students are also sitting on a hunger strike.
No agreement on administration’s proposal: In an order issued on 26 October, the university administration had said elections would be held within 15 days of approval of the students’ union constitution, suspensions and show-cause notices issued during the protest would be withdrawn, and a committee would be formed to examine the role of security personnel. However, the protesting students did not consider these proposals sufficient for their demands. They say a clear timeline should be fixed for the election process and approval of the constitution.
Online classes, security increased: In view of the tense situation, the university had decided to conduct classes online and advised students to avoid coming to the campus. It was also announced that gates and libraries would remain closed until further orders. Amid police deployment and restrictions at the gates, reports emerged of clashes between protesters and security forces. Indications that the movement will continue: The students’ main demand is the restoration of student union elections and completion of the related process in a time-bound manner. With differences persisting between the administration and protesters, the situation on the university campus remains sensitive.
