CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. The way has been cleared for student union elections at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University after nearly 20 years. Following a long student movement and hunger strike, the university administration has announced a definite timeline for the election process. It has also agreed to withdraw disciplinary action initiated against protesting students. After the administration’s decision, the students ended their agitation and hunger strike.
According to an order issued by the university registrar’s office on October 29, the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) will be approved and implemented by May 15, 2027. Student union elections will then be held within six weeks of the new academic session beginning on July 16, 2027. The election process will be completed in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee. On the basis of this timeline, elections are likely to be held by August 2027.
The administration has also ordered the withdrawal of all related disciplinary actions against students involved in the movement, including show-cause notices, suspensions, expulsions and restrictions on entry to the campus.
Students had been protesting since October 12, demanding the restoration of the student union and the announcement of a definite date for elections. Some students had also begun an indefinite hunger strike. Earlier, the administration had given an assurance that elections would be held, but the students did not accept it because no timeline had been fixed for approving the constitution.
The student union at Jamia was dissolved in 2006. Since then, no central-level elections had been held in the university. The new order has now raised hopes that elected student representation will be restored after two decades.
