CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. The 18-day agitation and hunger strike at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University over the demand for student union elections has ended. The university administration accepted the key demands of the protesting students and fixed a timeline for finalising the student union constitution and holding the elections. Following this, the agitating students announced the end of their fast.

According to the university administration’s decision, the process of approving and implementing the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union will be completed by 15 May 2027. After this, student union elections will be held within six weeks of the start of the new academic session in July 2027. The election process will be in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee. Student representatives from each faculty, along with teachers and legal experts, will also be included in drafting the constitution.

The administration has also decided to withdraw disciplinary actions taken during the agitation, including show-cause notices issued to students, suspensions, expulsions and restrictions on entering the campus. After this decision, students described it as acceptance of their demands and ended the agitation.

A fresh order has also been issued regarding classes on the campus. According to the university’s latest instructions issued on 30 October, offline classes and examinations for all undergraduate and postgraduate courses will begin from 2 November 2026. Regular attendance will remain mandatory. Earlier, it had been stated that online classes would continue until 8 November, but the new order has fixed 2 November as the date for starting offline teaching.

Student union elections have not been held at Jamia since 2006. In this context, the proposed election is being seen as an important step towards restoring the system of student representation in the university.
