CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. The agitation at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University demanding student union elections has finally ended. Students withdrew their hunger strike and protest, which had continued for 18 days, after the university administration announced a definite timeline for the election process. The decision is being seen as a significant development in the movement seeking the restoration of the student union.
According to an order issued by the university registrar’s office on October 29, the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union will be approved and implemented by May 15, 2027. After this, student union elections will be held within six weeks of the start of the new academic session. The university’s next academic session is scheduled to begin in July 2027. The election process will be completed in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee.
The administration has also directed the withdrawal of show-cause notices, disciplinary action, expulsion, suspension and orders linked to bans on campus entry issued against students involved in the movement. The university has also announced that offline classes and examinations will begin from November 2.
Students had been protesting since October 12, demanding restoration of the student union and a clear timeline for elections. Student union elections have not been held at Jamia since 2006. Earlier, the administration had given an assurance to conduct the elections, but students continued their movement because no fixed timeline had been provided.
After the new order fixed a deadline for implementing the constitution, the protesters ended the hunger strike. The university administration will now be responsible for implementing the constitution and completing the election process within the stated timeline.
