Police have intensified their investigation after a major daylight robbery at Canara Bank’s Golmuri branch in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The criminals fled with about Rs 42 lakh in cash and nearly 23 kg of gold. A 20-member Special Investigation Team, led by the city superintendent of police, has been formed to probe the case.
According to police, five to seven armed men entered the bank at around 9:10 am on Thursday. They held bank employees and the security guard hostage at gunpoint, forced the bank chest to be opened, and looted cash and gold ornaments. The men fled on motorcycles after the crime.
The gold looted from the bank is said to weigh about 23 kg. It had been kept in the bank against gold loans and is reported to belong to several customers. The final assessment of the value of the stolen gold will be made after examination of bank records and the investigation.
The SIT has begun scanning CCTV footage from the bank and nearby areas. Police have also started technical investigation to identify the criminals and are conducting raids at several locations. A forensic team collected fingerprints and other evidence from the scene. Police said some important leads have been found in the investigation and the search for the accused is continuing.
