CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: A new phase of protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is taking shape in Delhi, with demonstrators being stopped, detained and dispersed before reaching the designated Jantar Mantar protest site. The developments come ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) announced mobilisation in the national capital on October 10. According to Times of India, protesters have been prevented from reaching Jantar Mantar since October 2, with police tightening security and placing barricades along approach roads. The demonstrations are linked to opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands concerning the Election Commission. The situation has also raised questions about whether protests may increasingly take place outside the formally designated protest zone if access to Jantar Mantar remains restricted. Delhi Police had deployed more than 4,000 personnel around New Delhi during earlier protests and imposed restrictions on gatherings in the vicinity of Jantar Mantar. Multiple barricades, police vehicles and surveillance measures were used to control movement around the site. The latest developments follow earlier demonstrations in which protesters were stopped before reaching the venue. CJP leaders have announced further mobilisation from October 10, while authorities have continued to emphasise restrictions around the designated protest area. The unfolding situation is being closely watched as both protesters and police prepare for the next phase of demonstrations.
