CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The number of people aged 100 years or above in Japan has crossed 100,000 for the first time. According to Japan’s health ministry, the country recorded 107,677 such people this year, 7,914 more than last year. The figure was released on 15 September.

Women make up the largest share of the total. Of the 107,677 centenarians, 94,298 are women, accounting for about 88 percent of the total. The number of people aged 100 years or above in Japan has been rising steadily. In 1963, there were only 153 such people, while the figure crossed 10,000 in 1998 and 50,000 in 2012.

Japan is among the countries with the world’s highest average life expectancy. According to 2025 figures, average life expectancy stood at 81.35 years for men and 87.33 years for women. Experts count Japan’s relatively healthy eating habits, low obesity levels and universal healthcare among the key factors linked to longevity. The ageing population is also creating new challenges for Japan in social security, health services and the workforce.
