CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Jaya Bachchan’s Controversial Remark on Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha
Samajwadi Party MP and former actress Jaya Bachchan is often in the news for her fiery temper and outspoken statements. Recently, her comment on Akshay Kumar’s film has sparked controversy in the media and among audiences.
During a TV program, Jaya Bachchan stated that she would never watch films like PadMan and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. Her remark is being perceived as a sarcastic dig at Akshay Kumar and the filmmakers.
When asked about films based on governance and social issues, Jaya cited these two movies as examples and commented:
“Just look at the names of these films. I would never watch any of them. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha—what kind of name is that? What is the title of the film? Tell me honestly, how many of you would watch a movie with such a name?”
When only a few people in the audience raised their hands, she mockingly added, “That’s why the film flopped.” This controversial statement has since sparked debates across social platforms.
Mixed Reactions to Jaya Bachchan’s Statement
Following her remarks, opinions were divided. Some people agreed with her, while others criticized her for dismissing films aimed at raising social awareness.
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was made in support of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) and was released on August 11, 2017. Made on a budget of ₹75 crore, the film grossed ₹200 crore at the box office. Starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, the film’s songs also became highly popular.
