CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: JDU to fight UP elections under Nishant Kumar’s leadership, alliance challenge before BJP
CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies: The Janata Dal United (JDU) has stepped up its political activity in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The party has placed Nishant Kumar, son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and a minister in the Bihar government, at the centre of its organisational expansion and election preparations in Uttar Pradesh. At a state-level workers’ conference held in Varanasi, the party’s working national president Sanjay Jha indicated preparations to contest the election by projecting Nishant Kumar.
Nishant Kumar said the party wants to strengthen its organisation in Uttar Pradesh and will try to enter the 2027 Assembly elections as a constituent of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He also spoke of cooperation in the state’s development work under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. However, no formal agreement has yet been reached with the BJP on seat-sharing. The final decision on this will be taken by the party’s senior leaders.
JDU faces a major challenge in expanding its support base in Uttar Pradesh. The party’s electoral record here has been limited. In 2007, it won one Assembly seat, while it failed to win any seat in the 2012 and 2022 elections. In 2022, the party fielded 27 candidates and its vote share was around 0.11%.
JDU is focusing particularly on Kurmi-dominated seats in Purvanchal. But if there is an alliance with the BJP, seat-sharing and the influence of the already existing ally Apna Dal (S) will be important issues. In such a situation, JDU’s expansion under Nishant Kumar’s leadership could become an opportunity for the BJP to increase allied votes, while also creating a new challenge within the alliance over seats and social equations.
