JK Hospital performs first successful laparoscopic diaphragmatic hernia surgery in Bhopal

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A complex diaphragmatic hernia was successfully operated on using the laparoscopic method at J.K. Hospital of LN Medical College, Bhopal. This was the first time such a surgery was successfully performed at the hospital using laparoscopic technique.

The 50-year-old patient had been suffering for the past nearly five to six months from complaints of breathlessness, difficulty in breathing while walking and a dry cough. The patient was also unable to lie flat. During examination, a right-sided diaphragmatic hernia was detected. The patient was operated on through the laparoscopic method.

The surgery was performed by Professor and Head of the Department of General Surgery Krishnanand, Amit Tiwari, Akshara Rathore, and Manish Shivani of the Department of Anaesthesia, along with their team. The operation was successful and the patient did not develop any complications after the surgery. During the post-operative period, the patient’s condition remained satisfactory and improvement was also seen in respiratory complaints. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the third day.

A diaphragmatic hernia is a condition in which abdominal organs can move into the chest due to a defect in the diaphragm. In adults, its diagnosis can be relatively challenging and, in some cases, patients continue to seek medical advice for respiratory symptoms for a long time. In such cases, proper investigation and timely surgical treatment are important.

The successful performance of this kind of surgery at J.K. Hospital reflects the modern minimally invasive surgical facilities and expertise available at the institution.
