CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Students on hunger strike over their demands at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi faced heavy rain and a storm on the night of Sunday, October 11. Due to the bad weather, the tent set up by the students at Sabarmati T-Point was completely damaged. The belongings and bedding kept inside the tent were also soaked, forcing the students to spend the night in the open.
According to media reports, two students, Dhananjay and Kishan, were injured after a heavy iron rod fell on the tent. After the incident, the protesting students raised concerns over safety arrangements. The students said they had been agitating for several days over their demands, but their issues had not been resolved. Reports have also emerged that the health of some students taking part in the protest has deteriorated due to the continuing hunger strike.
The agitation is continuing over several demands. Students associated with the JNU Students’ Union and other student organisations are raising demands for improvements in basic facilities on the campus, repair of old hostels, expansion of facilities in the library, improvement of the health centre and repair of roads. In addition, the students are demanding the university’s role in the admission process, hostels for PhD students, separate accommodation for transgender students and restoration of the old committee for handling complaints of sexual harassment.
The students said the movement would continue until concrete action is taken on their demands. The damage to the tent amid bad weather has further increased the difficulties of the protesters.
