CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. At Jawaharlal Nehru University, 17 students, including student union office-bearers, have been on an indefinite hunger strike since October 3 over various demands. The student union has said the agitation will continue until concrete action is taken on their demands.

The students’ main demands include withdrawal of the Office of the Chief Proctor manual, cancellation of the expulsion of student union office-bearers, restoration of GSCASH, the complaints mechanism against sexual harassment, and the restarting of the JNU entrance examination. The students are also seeking reforms in the Equal Opportunity Cell in line with the proposed Rohith Act.

The students have also raised several issues related to the university’s infrastructure. These include renovation of hostels, increasing seats in the library, repairing faulty lifts, improving campus roads and the stadium, and restoring mess and Wi-Fi facilities in Barak hostel. They have also demanded improvements at the health centre and the provision of toilets in line with gender equality.

In addition, the student union has demanded an independent inquiry into alleged recruitment irregularities, an increase in the merit-cum-means scholarship amount, inclusion of engineering students under its ambit, an audit of mess bills, and hostel facilities for students until submission of their PhD.

The student union has also accused the university administration of putting pressure on protesting office-bearers and raised allegations linked to medical examinations. It has emerged that the administration has cited rules and expulsion orders to the students. Amid the dispute between the two sides, the hunger strike continued for the third day.
