CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Journalism Offers the Most Employment Opportunities: Mahendra Pratap Singh

Journalism is a field that offers the highest number of employment opportunities. Over the past decade, various dimensions of journalism have created numerous new career prospects. These thoughts were expressed by senior editor Mahendra Pratap Singh during the ‘Dialogue with the Editor’ series organized by the Department of Journalism at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication on the topic ‘Challenges and Opportunities in Journalism.’ The event was attended by Head of the Department, Sanjeev Gupta.

Social Media: A Major Challenge to Journalism

Singh highlighted that social media poses the biggest challenge to journalism today. Due to social media, everyone is trying to become a journalist, which has led to a crisis in the credibility of news. According to a report, 97% of people create news under the influence of social media. When news is generated based on secondary sources, its authenticity is no longer in our control.

He also emphasized that modern journalists must compete with technology, especially artificial intelligence-based tools. Journalism students should learn new technologies and consider visual storytelling while writing news copies.

The Shift Towards Digital Media and Its Impact

Singh pointed out that journalists today write with a focus on digital media’s revenue model rather than public interest. In digital media, likes and shares drive page views, influencing how news is presented. There is increasing pressure to write short, concise news rather than detailed reports.

Research suggests that readers spend an average of just 3.5 seconds on a news article, and even for highly significant news, they devote a maximum of 3 minutes. The same trend is observed in newspapers. This presents a major challenge—how to keep readers engaged for longer.

Journalism Still Holds Great Potential

Despite these challenges, Singh asserted that journalism continues to offer immense opportunities. Today, content consumption is at an all-time high, and content creators are in demand across all sectors. To succeed in this evolving landscape, aspiring journalists must read quality literature, learn new skills, and develop multitasking abilities.

During the session, Singh addressed students’ queries and provided insightful guidance. The event was hosted by Assistant Professor Ranjan Singh, and attended by media educators Shivkumar Vivek, Satendra Dahiya, Lokendra Singh, along with a large number of students.
