Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has resigned from the party’s primary membership, with the resignation accepted by the national leadership on Friday.

The development comes after recent political discussions in Tamil Nadu and speculation over his next public move. People close to Annamalai indicated that he may remain silent for now before deciding his future course.

A day earlier, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran had dismissed speculation around his exit and said no resignation letter had been received. Annamalai was expected to address supporters on June 5 and speak about his political plans.

The episode is being watched closely in Tamil Nadu politics because Annamalai had become one of the BJP’s most visible faces in the state.
