CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Kaif warns Gambhir: strengthening bowling is essential for the World Cup

Amid preparations for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has offered important advice to head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management. Kaif believes India should not depend only on experienced batters such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to win the World Cup. Strong bowling and excellent fielding will be equally important for the team’s success. In the tournament to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the Indian team will have to prepare a balanced combination suited to the conditions.

Bowling will be crucial in South African conditions. According to Mohammad Kaif, many pitches in South Africa have become better for batting than before. In such a situation, batters could dominate during the World Cup. Kaif believes the team with the better bowling attack will have a greater opportunity to perform well in big matches.

Kaif said India will have to improve its bowling and fielding. In a major tournament, scoring more runs alone is not enough; the ability to stop the opposition, take wickets under pressure and hold catches in difficult situations can also prove decisive.

India cannot depend only on Kohli and Rohit. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are among the most experienced players in Indian cricket. Both have contributed to the team’s victories in several important matches. However, Kaif says relying on one player’s performance is not the right strategy to win a World Cup in overseas conditions.

According to him, Kohli and Rohit can perform well, but the other players will also have to fulfil their responsibilities. A collective performance in bowling and fielding, along with batting, can take India closer to the title. The team’s young players will also have to prove their ability in pressure matches.

Kaif explained teamwork by citing the example of the 2003 ODI World Cup. He said the contribution of the entire team is crucial in major tournaments. In that World Cup, the Indian team reached the final under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy but lost the title clash to Australia.

In that tournament, Sachin Tendulkar batted brilliantly and was named Player of the Tournament. Even so, other players in the team also made important contributions. Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag played significant roles with the bat, while Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath showed their ability with the ball. Kaif also scored an unbeaten half-century against New Zealand. Through this example, he underlined that in major tournaments, contributions from other players as well as star performers are necessary for title success.

India will have to build a balanced team for the World Cup 2027. The ODI World Cup 2027 is scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The tournament will begin on October 2 and run until November 21. Keeping in mind the important matches in South Africa, the Indian team will have to focus on pace bowling, fielding and strategies suited to the conditions.

The essence of Mohammad Kaif’s advice is that India should not rely only on its big batters. Strong bowling, sharp fielding and contributions from every player in the team can play an important role in improving India’s chances of winning the World Cup.
