CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Haldwani. Preparations are being made to speed up construction of the Amritpur bypass to provide relief from traffic jams during the tourism season and long weekends in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday, October 25, carried out a site inspection of the under-construction Kathgodam-Amritpur bypass and directed officials to complete the work on priority. He made it clear that there would be no shortage of funds for the project and that there should be no compromise on construction quality.
The growing crowd of devotees at Kainchi Dham has become a challenge. According to the Chief Minister, in the past few years the number of devotees visiting Kainchi Dham for darshan of Baba Neem Karoli, and tourists travelling to Nainital, Ranikhet, Kausani, Almora, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, has increased. During the long weekend from October 2 to 4, more than 45,000 devotees reached Kainchi Dham in a single day. This led to traffic jams for several hours on nearby roads. The rising traffic pressure affects the movement of tourists as well as local residents. In this situation, preparing an alternative route is being considered necessary.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister directed officials to complete the work within the fixed timeline, maintain regular monitoring and follow safety standards during hill cutting. He said negligence in construction would not be tolerated. According to Public Works Department officials, Rs 1.75 crore has been approved for the first phase of the project and about Rs 4.69 crore for the second phase. At the time of inspection, it was informed that about 15 per cent of the bypass work had been completed. Construction of a 75-metre-span steel bridge on the Kathgodam-Amritpur route is also underway.
The Amritpur bypass is intended to provide an alternative route for vehicles going from Haldwani and Kathgodam towards Nainital, Kainchi Dham and nearby hill areas. Once completed, it is expected to help reduce traffic pressure on the main roads. However, as construction work is still underway, passengers should not expect immediate relief. Its actual benefit will be visible only after the bypass is fully ready and opened for safe traffic movement.
