CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai’s metro expansion received a major boost as the proposed Kalbadevi and Girgaon metro stations have successfully cleared heritage-related hurdles. These stations, part of the crucial Metro-3 corridor connecting Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ, had been facing delays due to objections over potential impact on heritage structures in south Mumbai.

Authorities confirmed that the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) reviewed the project and granted clearance after ensuring that no significant damage would occur to nearby protected buildings. The decision came after detailed studies, impact assessments, and architectural redesigns that aligned with conservation norms.

Kalbadevi and Girgaon are among the city’s most densely populated and historically rich neighbourhoods, known for narrow lanes, traditional markets, and iconic old buildings. Residents and heritage activists had raised concerns about possible threats to structures dating back over a century. The metro authorities, however, assured that advanced tunneling technology and monitoring mechanisms would minimize risks.

Officials believe that the clearance marks a turning point for the Metro-3 project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and provide faster commuting options to thousands of daily passengers. Once operational, the line will significantly cut travel time between south and north Mumbai.

Urban planners have welcomed the move, highlighting it as a fine balance between infrastructure growth and cultural preservation. With construction work set to resume at full pace, the Kalbadevi and Girgaon stations are likely to emerge as models for integrating heritage sensitivity into modern infrastructure.
