CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Around 96 percent of the ropeway project under construction to modernise public transport in Varanasi has been completed. Once the project starts, it is expected to provide major convenience to city residents and devotees visiting the Kashi Vishwanath temple.

Through the ropeway, the distance from Cantt Railway Station to Baba Vishwanath Dham will be covered in just 16 minutes. At present, covering this distance takes considerably longer depending on traffic conditions.

A key feature of the project is that the ropeway will operate at a height of around 50 feet above the ground. Its stations are being developed on the lines of modern metro stations. Keeping passenger convenience and safety in mind, modern technology and essential passenger facilities are being arranged on the station premises.

The proposed minimum fare for the ropeway has been fixed at Rs 10. However, the fare may vary according to different distances and stations. Under the project, there is a plan to connect key locations including Cantt Railway Station, Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Girjaghar and Godowlia. This will help reduce traffic pressure in the city’s busy areas.

In a city such as Varanasi, which is important from religious and tourism perspectives, the project is being seen as a new transport option. Devotees and tourists may benefit from it, especially during festivals, religious events and the tourism season.

After the remaining construction work of the project is completed, safety tests and other necessary formalities will be carried out. After this, the process to start the service for general passengers will move forward.
