CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal/ Ujjain: A special lecture on “Guru-Shishya Tradition and Institutional Teaching Method in Kathak Dance” was organized on September 17 at Shalaka Diirgha, Vikram University, Ujjain. The keynote speaker, renowned dancer Dr. Vijaya Sharma from Bhopal, shared her experiences on the depth of the guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) relationship and its tradition. She stated that the selection of a disciple is done by the guru, not by the student, and that this relationship is connected not only to education but also to important life lessons. The program was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Arpan Bhardwaj. The chief guest was Mr. Shripad Joshi, Co-Treasurer of Bharatiya Sanskar, and other dignitaries included senior theatre artist Satish Dave, Bharatiya Sanskar Pradesh President Sanjay Sharma, and Controller of Examinations Dr. D.D. Bediya.

In her lecture, Dr. Sharma described the prominent guru-shishya relationships in Kathak and emphasized the importance of selecting the right guru. She mentioned that her guru not only taught her dance but also imparted practical life lessons. With her guidance and blessings, Dr. Sharma has achieved many milestones in her career. Vice-Chancellor Arpan Bhardwaj stated that art is not just a skill but a form of dedicated practice (sadhana). He announced that a new department of music will soon be established at Vikram University, providing young artists with opportunities to learn and perform. Prof. Bhardwaj highlighted the significance of art and the guru-shishya tradition and encouraged students to engage deeply with dance and music.

The program was conducted by dancer Ms. Palak Patwardhan, and at the end, Mr. Shashidhar Nagar expressed gratitude to the guests. This lecture proved to be a program that will give new direction to the art and dance tradition at the university.
