CNN Central News and Network–ITDC India ePress / ITDC News Bhopal: After the first case of Nipah virus this year was reported in Kerala, the health department and the administration have gone on full alert. The infected patient is said to be in critical condition and has been placed on ventilator support at a hospital. A special team of doctors is continuously monitoring the patient.

According to officials, the patient showed symptoms of the Nipah virus and was immediately tested, which confirmed the infection. The patient was then shifted to an isolation ward to prevent the spread of the virus.

Emergency protocol enforced at hospital

As soon as the case was confirmed, the hospital administration enforced emergency protocols. All people who came in contact with the infected patient are being identified, and primary-level screening of them has begun. The health department said no negligence of any kind will be allowed.

Staff quarantined, contact tracing intensified

Doctors, nurses and other staff involved in the patient’s treatment have been quarantined as a precaution. At the same time, a list of the patient’s recent contacts is being prepared in an effort to break the chain of infection. The administration has also increased surveillance in the affected areas.

High alert across the state

Taking the situation seriously, the state government has issued a high alert across Kerala. All government and private hospitals have been directed to remain vigilant. Immediate reporting and testing of suspected cases have been made mandatory.

The health department has appealed to people not to pay attention to rumours and to rely only on official information.

Sixth outbreak in eight years

It is noteworthy that this is the sixth time in the past eight years that a Nipah virus case has surfaced in Kerala. Repeated outbreaks have increased pressure on the health system, although the government has moved swiftly with control measures each time.

How dangerous is the Nipah virus?

Nipah virus is a serious infection that can spread from animals to humans and can also be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person. The virus can cause severe conditions such as brain fever (encephalitis), increasing the risk to life.

According to experts, timely identification and isolation are the most effective safeguards against it.

Administration’s appeal

The administration has urged people to exercise caution in crowded areas, maintain cleanliness, and contact a health centre immediately if any suspicious symptoms appear.
